Footnote #6
Museum staff carefully wrote the titles and
headings for each part of the exhibit because these help guide visitors through
the exhibition. In Area 4, the original title was “Shrinking Communities &
A Growing Nation.” This was chosen to reflect that Fairfield was experiencing a
slow-down in population and business growth, while at the same time, the United
States was expanding and growing.
The new title, “Starting Over and Seeking Opportunity,” was selected to show how citizens were impacted by national growth and why many decided to move away. The museum staff wanted “to present a positive message” so that visitors would leave with a more optimistic outlook and understand the choices that people were making during that time.
The planning, research and design to create a major exhibit takes several years. The staff had time to discuss each message carefully and ultimately make changes in the final version.
