Why
did the Fairfield Museum staff decide to create this exhibit? Part of the
Fairfield Museum’s mission includes making history “personal and meaningful”
and “to encourage civic participation.” They decided that visitors could
understand Fairfield’s history better by telling stories about local people
using highlights from the Museum’s collections. Therefore you will see stories
about how people lived, worked, and played in Fairfield as a way to understand
the past.
The staff says they hope the exhibit will “encourage community activism.” They believe that: “The future of society relies on people educating themselves on the context and history of where and who they are and then being participants in creating community – this is why we called this [exhibit] Creating Community.” The hope is that the exhibit will help you understand your role in your community. The museum staff want you to walk away with the idea that “society is you.”
